The North Philadelphia Beacon Project

The word "Rise" soars 40 feet high in the heart of North Philadelphia. Through a collaboration with the artist, Sobriety Through Out-Patient (S.T.O.P.), and volunteers, the mural is a testimony to community and resilience.

The "Philadelphia Badlands" is a section of North Philadelphia known for drug- and gang-related violence and open air drug markets. It is located in a pocket of post-industrial blight, leaving stripped warehouses and rundown row houses amongst the shadows of a once bustling hub.

The Badlands contain an ethnic mix, with Puerto Ricans making up the majority. It contains El Centro de Oro, the Puerto Rican commercial district and center of the community.
