Our Urban Landscape

Adorning the side of a Family Shop Rite, this mural is a South Philadelphia icon. It serves as a linchpin of the community, combining portrayals of food and residents.

The young black woman in the mural represents a significant demographic, and brings up an interesting facet of the city. Single black motherhood is pervasive in Philadelphia, as it is nationwide. According to statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 72% of black children are born to unmarried women.

This has led to the flourishing of strong communities of black women. This network is supportive and extensive, clearly visible in every day life and earning many more murals celebrating the sisterhood.
